Earl grey is black tea that has been infused with bergomant essential oil. Earl Grey is rich in potent antioxidants called catechins which destroy cell damaging free radicals that increase the risk of chronic diseases. Drinking Earl Grey (or black tea) can help improve cardiovascular health, and may reduce the risk of heart disease, cancer and type-2 diabetes.

Bergamont, a small citrus fruit traditionally grown in Asia, contains high levels of protective antioxidants. Bergamont is recommended for supporting healthy mood and for alleviating anxiety and mild depression. Drinking Earl Grey can help you feel more relaxed and can improve mood. (1)

Studies have shown that black tea contains L-theanine, an amino acid that can help you relax and improves concentrate. Black tea has also been found to help reduce cortisol levels, our bodys major ‘stress hormone’. (2)

Rose petal (Rosa) tea has been used in Chinese medicine for more than 5,000 years to help improve circulation and digestion, and ease anxiety and depression. According to a 2005 study published in the Journal of Midwifery and Women’s Health, rose tea is recommended for the treatment of PMT in women including alleviating menstrual cramps, swollen breasts and moodiness. Rose petals are also a good source of vitamin C, which is beneficial for boosting immune function, and increasing collagen production essential for healthy skin.

Orange peel is abundant in flavonoids, which act as a powerful antioxidant, they have an anti-inflammatory action, and aid vitamin C function in the body. Flavanoids found in orange peel have been found to help reduce the risk of skin and lung cancer. Orange peel is also rich in vitamin C and A, two important immune strengthening and antioxidant nutrients. Citrus rind contains a compound called d-limonene, which has anti-cancer properties. Scientists have discovered that consuming citrus peel with hot black tea can significantly reduce the risk of skin cancer. Both d-limonene and tea polyphenols that have potent antioxidant action which help destroy cell damaging free radicals. (3)

Cornflower blue (Centaurea cyanus) have been traditionally used for their soothing effect, beneficial for alleviating muscle pain. Black tea does contain some caffeine so this tea is better suited for day-time drinking, especially if you are sensitive to caffeine. Black tea contains around 45mg caffeine per cup, which is much lower than a cup of brewed coffee – 100-300mg of caffeine per cup – and more than green tea containing 20 mg.

For those who are sensitive to caffeine try steeping your tea twice. A majority of the caffeine from your tea can be removed by pouring hot water over the leaves and then leaving it for 30 seconds. Caffeine in tea is released during the first 30 seconds of steeping. Pour out the tea and then re-steep your tea with more hot water using the same leaves.
